Next Door to Nanny

As the stories in this book presented themselves to me, I noticed that they were a combination of four genres: a personal memoir, a biographical sketch of my paternal grandparents, historical information about events and towns in East Tennessee, and a collection of recipes that I knew as a child − primarily food that my grandmother prepared. As I continued to write, these four elements became woven together like a tapestry, and I came to realize how much my own sense of belonging and security was rooted to a geographical region and to a particular set of people.

That geographical area was Maryville, Tennessee. The time was the mid-1950s, and the people were my parents and grandparents. This book is dedicated to them, especially to my paternal grandparents: Vensant Eugene Williams and Mary Lena Catron Williams, who lived “right next door.”

204 pages, 6 x 10" paperback. 2018.
